Ortona signage created by John Layman

John Layman

Very sad to announce that John Layman has passed away. John was a gifted calligrapher and painter who was another beloved and welcome addition to the Ortona Arts Community.  He had numerous shows in the Gallery and it was John who created the signage for the building (back when we cared about its’ history) so familiar to all who passed through our doors.  John also created posters and artwork for other artists and maintained a sign painting business in Whitehorse.

Mason Dean Lawrence

The Dean of Clean

Very sad to announce that Dean has passed away. Dean was an artist, poet, musician and all around beautiful human being. He was a beloved member of the Ortona; he was the personification of what the Ortona stood for, a gifted and sharing artist who, although he never had any official attachment to the building, became a vital and welcome contributor to our community. We were able to find a custodial position for Dean within the building and for many years he was a familiar sight in his blue janitorial uniform (Dean was a sharp dresser and always properly outfitted for the occasion). Dean made the world a better place for all of us. And man, what a voice!
